Wondering how to wash a human hair wig? Just like natural hair, your human hair wig must be washed on a regular basis. However, because they are more delicate than their synthetic counterparts, you must handle them with a little love.
Human hair wigs can be pricey, but trust us when we say – they are well worth the investment! When it comes to straightening, curling, colouring, and styling, not to mention comfort, wigs produced from 100% real human hair are far more robust than wigs created from synthetic fibres.
Best of all, human hair wigs by Tymeless Necessity Hair look remarkably real, so much so that no one will ever be able to tell those lovely locks arenβt yours.
Based on our extensive experience in creating tailored, undetectable, and high-quality wigs, hair prosthesis, and hair integrations specifically designed for those suffering from all types of hair loss, we’ve come up with the simplest way to wash and condition your wig so that it’s squeaky clean and as good as new,
In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to wash a human hair wig.
Β
Step 1: Brush
First, gently comb the wigβs ends. Once they’re knot-free, work your way up to the roots until you can comb or brush through them without snagging. For straight or wavy human hair wigs, use a wire wig brush; for curly wigs (including natural/African-textured), use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers.
Top tip: For styling, bristle brushes do the work without damaging wig hair. For detangling, a wide-toothed comb is preferred, whileΒ a paddle brushΒ is best for smoothing out human hair wigs.
Β
Step 2: Cleanse
Fill your sink halfway with cold water and add 1β2 squeezes of shampoo, mixing with your hands until the shampoo has dispersed into the water. Use a high-quality, sulphate-free shampoo that’s appropriate for the sort of hair you’re washing. If you’re washing a curly wig, for example, use a curly hair shampoo. If your wig has been dyed or colour-treated, use a colour-safe shampoo.
Top tip: Use salon brand moisturizing shampoos that are infused with vitamins herbs and that have a low-ph balance. We recommend JOICO K PAK COLOUR THERAPY SHAMPOO 300ML and JOICO K PAK SHAMPOO 300ML to keep your wig looking, and smelling, beautiful!
Β
Step 3: Submerge
Turn the wig cap inside out with your fingers, leaving the wig fibres hanging loose. Submerge the wig in the water and immerse the strands by pressing down on them. Swirl the wig gently to distribute the shampoo evenly among the strands.
Top tip: Turning the wig inside out allows the shampoo to reach the wig cap, which collects the majority of the dirt, sweat, and oils.
Β
Step 4: Soak
Allow the wig to soak for five minutes. Make sure the wig is completely submerged in the water before putting it on. During this period, do not move the wig. The fibres will become tangled if you do too much thrashing, squeezing, and twirling.
Top tip: When you wash the wig, do not rub too hard and work in a downward motion.
Β
Step 5: Rise
Rinse the wig with cold water until all of the shampoo has been washed away. You can rinse the wig in the sink or shower, or in a bucket filled with fresh, cold water. You may need to rinse the wig twice, depending on how thick it is.
Β
Step 6: Condition
Apply conditioner to the hair and finger-comb it softly. Avoid the wig cap if you’re wearing a lace front wig. The reason behind this is that the strands are hand-tied to the lace with knots, which may come undone if you are over-zealous with your conditioner.
Top tip: Conditioner can be used on your wig, but it should not be applied too close to the roots. Make sure you’re using a high-quality conditioner.
Β
Step 7: Nourish
Allow the nourishing oils to enter and hydrate the hair, just like the hair that grows out of your head, by leaving the conditioner on the wig for a few minutes. Rinse the wig with cold water until the water runs clear.
Top tip: For added hydration, use a conditioner that has hair reconstruct and moisture additive ingredients.
Β
Step 8: Dry
Squeeze the water out of the wig by turning it right side out. Remember that wringing or twisting the strands might cause them to tangle or break so rather squeeze the fibres in your fist while holding the wig over the sink.
To remove the excess water, roll the wig in a towel. Simply place the wig on the end of a clean towel and, starting at the end with the wig, roll the towel into a tight coil. Gently unroll the towel.
Top tip: Never brush your wig while itβs wet as this may damage the hair strands, causing the strands to become frizzy.
Β
Step 9: Restore
Using a spray bottle, you can apply a leave-in conditioner. Just be sure to hold the bottle 25 to 30 cm away from the wig. If the wig is curly, a styling mousse may be a better option.
Top tip: Try to avoid using hairspray on your wig and opt for mousse or lightweight styling products instead.Β
Β
Step 10: Shape
Allow the human hair wig to air dry outside of direct sunlight on a wig stand. If your wig is curly, “scrunch” it with your fingers every now and then. Scrunching involves cupping your hand under the hair’s ends, lifting it upward, and curling your fingers inward. The curls will gather together and keep their shape.
If you’re in a hurry, you can blow dry your human hair wig, just be sure to utilise a medium to low-heat setting, as you would your own natural hair.
Top tip: If you want additional volume, let the wig dry upside down. Flip the wig upside down and clip the wig cape’s neck to a pants hanger.
Β
And your human hair wig is ready to wear!
Washing your human hair wig is a little different from washing your own natural hair and extra care should be taken to ensure each strand is cleansed without any damage. When you’re not wearing your wig, itβs best to keep it on a wig stand.
Although wash frequency will depend on how often you wear your wig, we recommend your human hair wig is washed at least every two to four weeks for daily wear, and once a month if you wear your human hair wig every now and again.
Plan on washing your human hair wig every two to four weeks if you wear it every day. If you don’t wear it that often, wash it once a month. Ideally, have two wigs to wear at all times. While you wash one, you can either wear the other one or have it ready. In addition, you will extend the life of each wig and they will keep very well.
