Let’s be honest now. How often have you typed “How to put on a wig?” in the Google search bar in a state of misery because your wig doesn’t fit, is uncomfortable, or keeps falling off?
Want to know a little secret? One of the most common mistakes wig wearers make is not knowing how to put on a wig!
Sure, wearing a wig isn’t rocket science and sounds simple enough, but a certain art is involved in ensuring your wig looks as real as your own locks.
We chat with Rani Chetty, founder of Tymeless Necessity Hair, for her expert tips on applying a wig.

Choose the right wig
Before we get started, it’s important to explain why your wig choice can dramatically affect whether your wig looks real or not.
There are two types of wigs
Synthetic hair wigs or man-made fibre wigs
These are cheaper than real hair wigs, but most of them look fake and don’t blend in your real hair.
Due to the materials, many bulk wig manufacturers use in the making of wig caps for synthetic wigs, the wig cap can irritate the bare scalp, and cause skin inflammation and irritation.
Real Hair Wigs which are 100% human hair wigs
Since they are made of real human hair, they give a natural look and is very light-weight compared to synthetic hair wig. Tymeless Necessity Hair only stocks 100% real human hair wigs.
Remy hair is designed with the natural alignment with hair cuticles on the scalp and is the most realistic of all wigs.
We also use medical-grade wig caps to ensure optimal comfort for those suffering from long-term or permanent hair loss. The material we use is highly breathable, this makes wigs by Tymeless much cooler and easier to wear for a whole day.

Prep your natural hair under a wig cap
The key to making sure your wig isn’t lumpy when you wear it starts with how you prep your own hair underneath.
If you have thin hair, put it in a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. If your natural hair is particularly thick – and there is lots of it – you can opt to braid your hair into cornrows to create a smooth foundation for your wig.
“Whether you have hair or not, I recommend you put on a Wig Grip Band, such as our Imported Velvet Wig Grip that eliminates wig-related headaches by placing a barrier between your skull and the wig’s materials, or a Wig Cap or Head Wrap Bonnet,” says Rani.
“An adjustable velvet wig grip band ensures a non-slip and secure fit for those with little to no hair, safely secures your wig, and eliminates the need for clips, combs, or glue. On the other hand, a wig cap is essential for those with hair as it because it protects your natural hair from potential damage while wearing a wig, such as breakage from friction and scalp itching or irritation.”

Place the wig on your head, starting in the front
Locate the back of the wig, where the adjustable straps are. Hold the wig with both hands, one on each side of the tag. Place the front of the wig at your eyebrows and pull the wig over your head.
“Setting it at your eyebrows will keep it from slipping back,” says Rani. “As you pull the wig down, use your thumbs to tuck your own hair or ponytail under the wig.”
Take careful note of your natural hairline
Flip your head over and slide the front of the wig back until you reach your hairline. It is important to take it all the way to the hairline; otherwise, it looks like you don’t have a forehead. The best way to find your hairline is to place your fingers on your eyebrow to your forehead. Your hairline starts from your forehead, on your fourth finger.
If you have a big forehead, you might be conscious of it and constantly want to make hairstyles that will hide it and make your face appear less big. The best way of doing this is not to cover your forehead with the wig but rather to choose a wig that has a fringe or bangs.
Expert Tip: If you’re buying a wig for medical reasons, make sure it’s comfortable enough to wear on a daily basis. A wig band is similar to a headband in that it is made of soft, thin fabric, but it is worn under your wig.

Adjust the wig accordingly
Run your fingers along the sides of the wigs and find the two hard ear tabs; they are generally near your temples. Make sure that these ear tabs are even; this is how you know that your wig is on straight.
Once the wig is at your hair line, tabs are even, and the wig is pulled down in the back, you’re done.
If you find that the wig is too tight or too loose, take it off and adjust the elastic or Velcro tabs at the back of the wig, near the tag.

Lay down the baby hairs of your wig
While most high-quality wigs come with baby hairs, it helps to smooth them to create a more realistic finish. Simply brush these hairs, so they lie flat.
Even if you’re wearing a wig that comes pre-styled, don’t forget to brush it with a wig comb for a smooth finish.
Wigs need to be treated gently, and the brush that you would use for your natural hair may tear the wig cap or pull out the hair strands of your wig, which is why a wide-tooth comb is recommended.

What do you need to style a wig?
- Round brush
- Blow drier
- Texturizing spray
- Teasing brush
- Hair elastics
- Bobby pins
- Smoothening serum
- Fine toothed comb
Human hair wigs by Tymeless Necessity Hair look (and feel) more realistic, they’re safe for heat styling, and if you take care of them right, they’ll last you for a long, long time.
“With human hair wigs, you’ve got way more options when it comes to styling your hair,” says Rani.
“You should always treat these wigs like you would your own hair. This means spritzing on a heat-protectant spray all over before using any hot tools, removing your wig while you sleep, and placing it on a wig head (or in a silk or satin bag) to keep your style intact for longer while also limiting your use of heat.”
