Do you suffer from alopecia areata – a chronic dermatological disorder that affects hair follicles, causing thinning, balding, and unpredictable hair loss and regrowth cycles?
While there is no cure for Alopecia, reducing emotional stress is believed to be beneficial. Tymeless Necessity Hair is committed to helping Alopecia sufferers feel confident with our range of hair toppers, wigs, and hairpieces specifically designed with Alopecia sufferers in mind.
What Is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata is a condition in which the immune system destroys hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, numerous studies have shown that Alopecia areata is extremely common, affecting millions of people around the World.
“Hair is produced by structures in the skin called hair follicles. Although hair loss can occur elsewhere on the body, alopecia areata often affects the head and face, eyebrows, and eyelashes,” says Rani Chetty, founder of Tymeless Necessity Hair.
“In most situations, hair loss occurs in small, coin-sized patches, but in certain instances, it is more severe.”
How Does Alopecia Areata Progress?
The progression of alopecia areata differs from individual to individual. Some experience only a single incidence of hair loss during their lifetime, while others are in a cycle of hair loss that improves and worsens again.
Recovery is also unpredictable. Some individuals regain total hair growth while others do not.
Although there is no cure for alopecia areata, there are therapies that promote faster hair regrowth. There are various resources available to assist individuals with hair loss.

Who Develops Areata Alopecia?
Anyone is susceptible to developing alopecia areata. Surveys have, however, shown that there is a preponderance in men than women. The onset can occur at any age, but most patients are in their teens, 20s, or 30s. It is typically more extensive and progressive when it affects children younger than 10 years old.
“If you have a close relative with the condition, your chance of contracting it may be higher, but for many people, there is no family history,” adds Rani.
“Numerous genes have been connected to the condition, suggesting that genetics have a role in alopecia areata. Many of the genes they have identified are essential for immune system function.”
People with certain autoimmune disorders, such as psoriasis, thyroid disease, or vitiligo, and those with allergic conditions, such as hay fever, are more likely to develop alopecia areata.
Stress or sickness may promote alopecia areata in susceptible individuals, but there is no apparent cause in most instances.
3 Variations on Alopecia Areata
Three primary kinds of alopecia areata exist:
1. Patchy alopecia areata
In this type, which is the most common, hair loss happens in one or more coin-sized patches on the scalp or other body parts.
2. Alopecia totalis
People with this type lose all or nearly all of the hair on their scalp.
3. Alopecia universalis
In this type, which is rare, there is a complete or nearly complete loss of hair on the scalp, face, and rest of the body.
Manifestations of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata primarily affects the hair (eyebrows, eyelashes, pubic area, and beard in men included). However, in some instances, it also affects the nails.
Around the edges of the hair loss patch, there are frequently short, broken hairs or “exclamation point” hairs with a base that is thinner than their tip. On the exposed portions, there is typically no trace of a rash, redness, or scarring. Some individuals report feeling tingling, burning, or itching on skin regions just before hair loss.
How Do Bald Patches Due to Alopecia Areata Progress?
It is difficult to foretell what will occur when a bare patch emerges. The potential outcomes include:
- A few months later, the hair grows back. It may first appear white or grey, but its natural colour may return over time.
- Additional bald spots appear. Occasionally, hair regrows in the first bald spot while new patches emerge.
- Together, smaller patches make larger ones. In rare instances, total hair loss can occur, but this is unusual.
- In most cases, hair regrows, but further hair loss may occur days, weeks, months, and even years later.
Causes of Areata Alopecia
In alopecia areata, the immune system assaults hair follicles by mistake, resulting in inflammation. They believe that both hereditary and environmental (non-genetic) variables have a role in the immunological attack on hair follicles.
What Treatment is Available for Alopecia Areata?
The course of normal alopecia areata is unpredictable and spontaneous remission is likely. Less likely is hair to recover spontaneously, the longer the duration of hair loss and the larger the affected area.
Therefore, there are numerous treatments, but none of them can be predicted with certainty to affect the progression of this disease.
Here are a few standard treatment options available:
Local intracutaneous steroid injections: These may assist in resetting the hair growth cycle in treated areas.
Steroid creams, lotions, and shampoos: The benefits of these are at best modest.
Oral systemic corticosteroids: Although these are known to stimulate hair growth in affected patients, their long-term usage is contraindicated due to the possibility of adverse side effects.
Topical desensitisers: The effectiveness of these has been established in both young children and adults, but may cause side effects. Most individuals experience a relapse of hair loss once treatment is discontinued.Β
How Tymeless Necessity Hair Can Help
Sadly, there is no known effective way of prevention or stopping Alopecia. However, it’s believed that reducing emotional stress can be beneficial.Β
Although not technically a treatment, the cosmetic masking of alopecia areata is unquestionably a significant patient management issue. The emotional impact of excessive hair loss can be substantial for both men and women.
